Cash and checks are some of the most generous wedding gifts you can receive, and somehow they're also the hardest to write about. You don't want to name a dollar amount, you don't want to sound like you're writing a receipt, and "thanks for the money" feels a little blunt. The good news: a great cash-gift thank-you note follows a simple pattern, and once you have it, the rest of your stack gets much easier.
The simple formula for a cash gift thank-you note
Every good money thank-you note does four small things:
- Greet them warmly. Use the name they'd recognize: "Dear Aunt Linda," not "Dear Mrs. Peterson," unless that's how you know her.
- Thank them for their generosity, not the amount. Words like generous gift, kind gift or thoughtful gift do the work without mentioning a number.
- Say what it's going toward. This is the secret ingredient. Telling someone their gift is going toward your first apartment, your honeymoon or a new couch makes the gift feel real and personal.
- Close with warmth. A line about seeing them soon or how much they mean to you, then your sign-off.
That's it: three or four sentences is plenty.
Should you mention the amount?
In most cases, no. Naming the exact amount can feel transactional, and it puts the focus on the money instead of the person. "Your generous gift" says everything it needs to. The one exception is a very close family member who you know would enjoy hearing specifics. Even then, describing what you bought or saved for is usually warmer than a number.
What if you don't know what you'll spend it on yet?
That's completely normal. You can say you're putting it toward your future together, or simply that it's giving you a wonderful head start. Honesty is fine. "We're saving it for something special" is a lovely line.

Make 100 notes feel personal (without writing 100 from scratch)
If you received a lot of cash gifts, the hardest part is keeping each note from sounding identical. Two easy tricks: vary your opening line ("Thank you so much…", "We were so touched…", "What a generous…"), and always include one specific detail, like what the gift is going toward or a quick personal line.
Our free Thank-You Note Helper does exactly this. Paste in your gift list (name, gift and one personal detail), and it writes a different note for each person, ready to copy by hand or print. Your first 10 notes are free, and you can unlock your whole list when you're ready.

- Mention what the gift is going toward, if you can.
- Sign from both of you.
- Double-check the address and add a stamp.
