Hanukkah Thank-You Notes for Kids and Families: Eight Nights, Eight Notes
A Hanukkah thank-you note names the gift or the night you shared, says one true thing about it, and closes with a warm wish like Chag Sameach. Two to four sentences is plenty. Kids can write one short note each night after the candles, so by the eighth night every note is done. In 2026, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12.

Eight nights of gifts can mean a long list of people to thank. Spreading the notes across the holiday turns a January chore into a small nightly habit, and the notes come out warmer because the gift is still fresh. Here is a simple plan, a formula kids can follow, and examples for family, gelt and the friends who hosted you.
The eight nights, eight notes plan
Write one or two notes each evening, right after the candles. Here is one way to split the list in 2026. Swap the order to fit your family.
| Night | 2026 date | Who to thank |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1 | Fri, Dec 4 | Grandparents, who often give the first gift |
| Night 2 | Sat, Dec 5 | Aunts, uncles and cousins |
| Night 3 | Sun, Dec 6 | Whoever hosted the candle lighting or latke party |
| Night 4 | Mon, Dec 7 | Friends who sent gifts or gelt |
| Night 5 | Tue, Dec 8 | Teachers, Hebrew school and coaches |
| Night 6 | Wed, Dec 9 | Neighbors and family friends |
| Night 7 | Thu, Dec 10 | Anyone who mailed a gift from far away |
| Night 8 | Fri, Dec 11 | One note from the whole family, or catch up on any you missed |
If your family keeps Shabbat, the first and eighth nights fall on Friday this year. Write those notes after Shabbat ends on Saturday night, or on Sunday.
A simple formula for a Hanukkah thank-you note
- Thank them by name for the gift. Say what it is: the dreidel set, the book, the gelt.
- Add one true detail. How you used it, where it sits now, or what made you laugh.
- Mention the time together. Lighting candles, the latkes, the call on the fourth night.
- Close with a wish. Happy Hanukkah, Chag Sameach, or see you at Passover.
Let kids keep it short
Two sentences in a child's own words beat a page of perfect ones. Little kids can tell you a line to write down, then sign their name or draw a menorah.
Write right after the candles
Keep cards and a pen next to the menorah. Ten minutes after lighting is enough for one or two notes while the gift is still new.
Thank the time, not just the gift
Hanukkah is as much about the evenings as the presents. A line about the latkes, the songs or the dreidel game is often the part people remember.
Gelt and money count too
Thank them for the gelt or the check and say what it's going toward. There is no need to name the amount.

Frequently asked questions
What do you write in a Hanukkah thank-you note?
Name the gift or the night you shared, add one true detail about it, and close with a warm wish such as Happy Hanukkah or Chag Sameach. Two to four sentences is enough.
When should Hanukkah thank-you notes be sent?
Within about two weeks of the gift. In 2026 Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12, so aim to have notes out by late December. A later note is still welcome.
Do kids need to write a note for every night's gift?
One note per person is enough, even if that person gave a gift on several nights. Writing one or two short notes each night after the candles keeps it from piling up.
How do you thank someone for Hanukkah gelt or money?
Thank them by name, say what you plan to do with it or what you're saving for, and add a wish. You don't need to mention the amount.
Is it okay to write Hanukkah thank-you notes on Shabbat?
Families who keep Shabbat usually don't write from Friday sundown to Saturday nightfall. In 2026 the first and eighth nights fall on Fridays, so write those notes after Shabbat ends on Saturday night or on Sunday.
How do you say thank you for Hanukkah in Hebrew?
Toda raba means thank you very much, and Chag Sameach or Chag Urim Sameach means happy holiday or happy festival of lights. Yiddish speakers may say A sheynem dank.
