Holiday Thank-You Timeline 2026: When to Send Each Note
Send holiday thank-you notes within about two weeks of receiving the gift. For 2026, that means Hanukkah gifts (Hanukkah starts at sundown Friday, December 4) by mid to late December, and Christmas gifts (December 25) by mid January. Thank a host within a week.

| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Early November | Start one list: name, gift, address, note sent. Check addresses for anyone you mail to. |
| Before Dec 4 | Thank teachers, coaches and service workers with a note alongside any year-end gift. |
| Hanukkah, Dec 4 to 12 | Write down each gift as it is opened so nothing gets mixed up. |
| By about Dec 26 | Send notes for Hanukkah and early gifts. |
| Dec 25 | Jot down Christmas gifts and who gave them the same day. |
| After a hosted dinner | Within a week |
| By mid January | Send Christmas thank-you notes. |
| Running late? | Send it anyway. A January note is still welcome. |
Who to thank this season
- Anyone who sent or gave a gift, including gift cards and cash.
- Hosts of holiday meals and parties.
- Teachers, coaches, caregivers and child care staff.
- The people who keep your year running: mail carrier, bus driver, building staff.
Getting kids to write their own
Give children a fill-in note: Thank you for the ___. My favorite part is ___. Love, ___. Let them write it themselves, spelling and all. Relatives tend to keep these.
Do you need a note for every gift?
A written note is expected for gifts that were mailed, given by someone not present when it was opened, or that are especially generous. For gifts opened in person, a spoken thank-you is often enough, but a short note is always appreciated.
Example lines you can make your own
Thank you for the menorah. We lit it every night of Hanukkah, and the kids took turns choosing the candle colors.
Thank you for the cozy socks. I have worn them every morning since Christmas.
Thank you for hosting us on Christmas Eve. The table, the food and the games made it our favorite night of the season.
Thank you for driving our kids safely all year. It is a big part of what makes our mornings work.
